The Automatic Fire Extinguishing Ball: Kenya's Most Innovative Fire Safety Product
The fire extinguishing ball has taken Kenya by storm. No training required — just throw it at the fire. We review how it works, where to use it, and whether it replaces a traditional extinguisher.
The automatic fire extinguishing ball is one of the most talked-about fire safety innovations to arrive in Kenya. You've probably seen the videos — a ball thrown into a burning room, and within seconds the fire is out. But does it actually work? And can it replace your traditional fire extinguisher?
In this review, Naibuni Systems breaks down exactly how the fire ball works, the science behind it, where it's effective, and where you still need a traditional extinguisher alongside it.
How Does the Fire Extinguishing Ball Work?
The fire extinguishing ball contains a dry powder extinguishing agent (mono ammonium phosphate — the same ABC-rated chemical used in traditional dry powder extinguishers) packed tightly inside a spherical shell.
When the shell contacts flame, the heat causes a chemical reaction that ruptures the outer casing within 3–10 seconds, releasing the dry powder in a 360° spherical explosion. This instantly floods the fire area with extinguishing agent, cutting off the oxygen supply and suppressing the fire.
3 Ways to Use a Fire Ball
- Throw it — Roll or throw the ball into the base of the fire. You don't need to be close. You don't need training. Anyone can do it.
- Place it — Mount it on a wall or ceiling in a high-risk area. When a fire starts, the heat activates it automatically — no human needed.
- Hang it — Suspend it above a high-risk appliance like a generator, electrical panel or kitchen fryer. Automatic activation the moment fire starts.
Where Should You Use a Fire Ball in Kenya?
- Home kitchen: Mount above the cooker. If a fire starts when you're not in the kitchen, it self-activates.
- Vehicle: Keep one in the boot or under the seat. In a vehicle fire, it buys crucial extra seconds.
- Generator room: Generators are a major fire risk in Kenyan businesses. A ceiling-mounted fire ball provides 24/7 automatic protection.
- Electrical panels: Mount next to DB boards and distribution panels — prime fire risk points.
- Storage rooms: Areas that are locked or unmanned overnight benefit most from automatic activation.
- Matatu / bus / truck cabin: Compact and doesn't require operator training.
Does It Replace a Traditional Fire Extinguisher?
This is the most common question. The short answer: No — but it's an excellent supplement.
The fire ball has a limited agent charge (approximately 1.3kg) which provides coverage of about 3m² — enough to suppress a small, developing fire. A large, established fire will require the larger agent capacity of a traditional extinguisher.
The fire ball excels as:
- A first-line defence in unmanned areas where no person is available to operate a traditional extinguisher
- A supplement to traditional extinguishers, providing automatic activation before a fire can develop
- A home or vehicle safety device where traditional extinguishers may be impractical
